As far as I am concerned mini projects are surely a great hands-on-experience. Despite the fact that doing a mini project with fervor and one's own effort intensifies the desire to do new things,  many students neglect it and resort to external help. That's pitiable :( The present world we are living doesn't expect us to gain knowledge, wisdom through schools, colleges(of course moral values can be learnt).Web(plethora of information) makes it so easy for us to grasp the things which our ancestors only dreamt of.. How fortunate we are!? This doesn't enchant any of those students who are indolent, myopic to the resource availability who end up paying their hard earned money to an external source for  'MINI' project. A project never asks for anything more except the idea(have an idea!? then proceed;failure isn't a big issue). So miniproject is boon for all those who intend to learn and bane for all those who intend to spend. My suggestion is start with a simple project (even existing) do it in your way; climb a step ahead and explore a new resource; use the resource in the next project and go on. An example project for 3rd B.E., B.TECH students would help a lot...
Project:Student Portal
Things required:
Apache Tomcat server(free,thats around 7mb )
(For installation guide:
http://calvinspanorama.blogspot.in/2013/06/tomcat-installationand-configuration_28.html)
MsAccess database(Databases are most important in any project)
Knowledge regarding html, servlets and jsp's(this aint a big deal)
Note: This is just a prototype on how to work through ur project.

This would come in use when you to feel to depend on external agents :)
